Toddler Halloween Costumes - Fun and Safety Always Come First
The toddler age is such a fun age for Halloween. Unlike babies, you can't just put them in any old costume, and unlike teens, they probably (and thankfully) don't want to go as something super scary, horrific, or Gothic. And, you have a lot of choices when it comes to toddler Halloween costumes. Many toddlers may not have a clue about what Halloween is or what they are supposed to do on this fun holiday. All they may know is that they are supposed to dress up because they see that's what their older siblings do and other kids in the neighborhood. As with infant or baby costumes, you have to be very careful with toddler Halloween costumes because not only do you have to be thoughtful of the style or character, you more importantly have to be concerned with safety. Most of the time, it is best to go with the simple so you know they are not going to fall or even choke on something. What is easy about safe toddler Halloween costumes is that most of them that you find in the store are going to be safe, but don't take this as a guarantee. Go out of your way to check out the costume on your own. Though companies are more and more aware that toddler Halloween costumes, and anything else for infants and toddlers for that matter, are expected to be safe, mistakes happen. Most are safe, but there are always some recalls of items when something happens. Be sure to check especially for tripping and choking hazards before you buy.

A key component of safety for a toddler Halloween costume (and ANY costume for that matter) is visibility - how well can the child be seen at night when wearing the costume. Make sure your kids are very visible if you are going out for trick or treat in the evening hours. There has to be some reflective safety tape or material on the costume so that they will be seen if they wander away. If you are using a stroller, put some on that as well. Drivers tend to be more aware and more careful on Halloween, but accidents can happen. Little ones are hard to see if they dart out into the street with or without toddler Halloween costumes. If you are looking to make your own toddler Halloween costumes, you can find a lot of good ideas online. You may even find parts and materials to make just about anything you desire. When you do these on your own, once again, be very aware of the safety issue. It is YOU in this case who is going to be responsible to make sure the costume will be safe to wear and move or walk around in. If you think they are going to be in a stroller while wearing the costume, you may not worry too much about tripping. However, it can still be an issue. Make sure there are no small parts that you have added which could be removed by a surprisingly strong toddler that can then be put into the mouth.
Halloween is all about fun. There's nothing worse than spoiling that fun when a child ends up hurt or injured because of something they are wearing that very easily could have been prevented. Make sure you make safety the number one issue. Remove all potential hazards and safety risks that may be part of your toddler's Halloween costume. |
